Fernando Alonso: two Formula 1 world championships. Sebastian Vettel: four Formula 1 world championships. And according to Otmar Szafnauer, now the boss of the Alpine team, they share important similarities.
The Romanian, who was Vettel’s boss at Aston Martin, explains: “Alonso is very quick at learning circuits, providing feedback and adapting to different scenarios. In that sense, he is very similar to Sebastian Vettel.”
But they also have differences. The most important is “the way of motivating”: “I think that Fernando motivates the staff in a different way than Seb does, but each one has his own personality and technique.”
The experience of both drivers and their distance from the fight for big things in recent years is something that also takes them by the hand. In fact in recent times it has slipped that Alonso could take the position of Vettel in Aston Martin.
The Spaniard has this year left on his contract with Alpine and his future will be revealed in the summer. His intention is to continue competing in Formula 1 for at least two more years.
Vettel’s future is more doubtful. It is not ruled out that the four-time champion abandons the single-seaters early. And it is that in Aston Martin, especially in this 2022, he is not enjoying himself behind the wheel.
