It must be remembered that in boxing, boxers must compete in categories, in this way the organizations guarantee a fight under equal circumstances. The integrity of the athlete is always taken care of and that the physique is similar.

What is a flyweight in boxing?

The division is accepted by the organizations that govern the sport of the fists, the endorsed ones are: World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Organization (WBO), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Association (WBA).

Flyweight is one of the 17 divisions that exist in boxing, a minimum and maximum are allowed.

  • Flyweight: boxers weighing more than 48.9 kilos (108 pounds) and less than 50.8 kg (112 pounds)
  • For amateur boxing: more than 48 kilos (105.8 lbs) and less than 51 kg (112.44 lbs).

It is part of one of the traditional categories in fly, bantam, feather, lightweight, welterweight, middle, middle heavy and heavy boxing. The immediate previous category is light flyweight and the immediately superior super flyweight.

Until 1909, boxers below featherweight were considered, at the time, the lightest. Two years later in the British Boxing Board of Control organized his first fight in the division and the first champion was sid smith.

Among the most prominent flyweight champions are: Roman “Chocolatito” González, Omar Narváez, Dave McAuley, Miguel Canto and Jorge Arce.

Currently each organization has its champion and there can be an absolute one if it wins the belts of the four organizations mentioned. Mexicans, Argentines, English, Japanese and Americans have dominated the category from the beginning.
