United States.- In 1920 the American Football League of the United States was formed, which today we know as the National Football League (). In that year it was recognized as the American Professional Football Association, a rival tournament of the previously called American Football League.

In 1970, both Leagues officially decided to form one and from that moment the National Conference and the American Conference began their journey until they formed 16 franchises each and thus began the season with the 32 teams that make up American Football.

In the distant 1970 the National Conference (NFC) had 13 teams which played in the National Football League (NFL) before reaching an agreement with the American Football League. Since the merger three expansion teams have joined the National to complete the 16 teams so far.

When the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the NFL in 1976, they were inducted into the National and American for one year, respectively, before switching conferences. Seattle returned to the NFC as a result of the 2002 realignment, while the Carolina Panthers reached the National in 1995.

It is worth mentioning that the 16 franchises that make up the National Conference are divided by zones: North, South, East and West with four teams each, each one plays against the others in its division twice as home and away during the periodization regular.

At the end of the qualifying phase, the finals are held or as in the NFL it is known as ‘Playoffs’ with the 6 best teams in the NFC and AFC; the four division champions and two others in wild cards depending on the best win-loss record with the rest of the teams in their conference.
