With Davante Adams the Raiders are candidates for the Super Bowl

After the departure of Jon Gruden due to off-sports scandals, the Raiders were expected to fall resoundingly. By Week 14, the predictions looked like reality, but under Rich Bisaccia’s interim, Las Vegas won the last four games on the schedule (including the final game of the season) to reach the playoffs. Heading into the 2022 season, Mark Davis wants the organization to return to the postseason and be a Super Bowl contender.

Product of the uncertainty and doubts sown by Aaron Rodgers in Lambeau Field, the Raiders charged with everything to get Davante Adams through a trade. The move was already anticipated as the star wide receiver shared a dressing room with Derek Carr at Fresno State and previously expressed his desire to meet again with the quarterback.

To take advantage of Adams Bisaccia’s full offensive potential, he was not re-signed, and Davis opted to sign former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. During 13 years in New England (divided into two periods), Tom Brady added 3,704 passes, 43,003 yards and 315 touchdowns, two MVPs and three Super Bowls. However, McDaniels already has experience as a head coach and it was not good; he led the Broncos for 28 games and went 11-17.

With Adams, Derek Carr (4,804 yards, 23 TDs, 14 interceptions) will have an aerial cast led by the former Packer and Darren Waller and escorted by Hunter Renfrow, Keelan Cole and Josh Jacobs.

On the defensive front, where they finished 14th in 2021 while allowing 5,732 yards, the Raiders grew stronger in two ways. Through free agency they signed 16 players with Chandler Jones as the most important piece (he will pair with Maxx Crosby in the pass rush); in the draft they drafted defensive tackles Neil Farrell and Matthew Butler to shore up a unit that gave up 1,943 rushing yards in 2021 (19th in the league).

Despite the fact that McDaniels’ project seems to arrive well reinforced and with the necessary elements to impose conditions in the NFC, there are two factors that will complicate the Raiders’ campaign.

First up is the AFC West. The division has been led in recent years by the Chiefs, but the Chargers have begun to put pressure on the sector (signing JC Jackson and Khalil Mack will make their defense tougher); also, the Broncos acquired Russell Westbrook and Denver has resumed a leading role in the American Conference. The above has the Raiders as the division’s underdog to win the Super Bowl.

Then there is the Las Vegas calendar. The Raiders’ opponents for the upcoming season combined for a record of 152-136-1 (.528 winning percentage), which represents the seventh most difficult planning for an NFL team.
